Project Overview

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) employs 700 people and develops innovative manufacturing processes and technologies in partnership with industry and academia.

They needed to support the management population in holding effective career conversations with team members to equip them with the skills needed to drive their own development planning and internal career strategy. The solution needed to be credible with all employees. Career conversations are, for most managers, only an occasional activity. They rarely get the frequent practice that ensures skills remain high. The development platform needed to provide excellent support tools to make it easy to pick up this responsibility when required – and carry it out well every time.

The solution was to introduce CareerBurst to promote a self-driven growth culture and increase organisational flexibility and response to the changing business environment. We provided full access to core content as well as curating bespoke content. Employees had access to career science data and ResearchBursts, which are updated monthly with short articles with insights into how successful people drive their careers.

The CareerBurst platform also includes: self-driven career materials, updated fortnightly blogs, video Q&As with experts, 72 career tactics and self-development lab with learning experiments based on high-flyer research. Our Career Conversations module allows MTC’s managers and mentors to initiate and prepare for any of six supported career conversations. TalentBursts also support managers to get the best from the talent in their teams.

The platform enables people to access the content seamlessly from the intranet or company Academy and includes corporate branding.

CareerBurst went live in February 2019 and is already helping MTC support its goal of providing great careers to attract and retain talent. With a culture of promoting home grown talent, we hope MTC can use CareerBurst to build loyalty, minimise organisational disruption and save money.
